After beginning my college career in sunny West Palm Florida as a Popular Music Major, I transferred to Central Connecticut State University to embrace a broader passion: Education. It was hard for me to separate my love of music from my desire to open others to the same love, and so eventually, I stopped trying. Although I still pursue music for myself, I find great fulfillment in its application within a classroom. I finished top of my class at Central with a degree in Music Education in 2016 and eagerly got straight to work! Currently, I am working toward my masters in Arts Administration and Cultural Leadership.

COLLEGE

My

Education...

You could say that education is in my DNA; you wouldn't be far from wrong.  I developed my passion for this thriving and crazy community we call "school" early on, knowing it is so much more than the place teachers go to teach and children go to learn. After graduating, I spent some time at Raymond Hill School, part of Klingberg Family Center, where I received invaluable training that simply cannot be captured with a label. From there, I applied for and received the position here at Plymouth Center School. I have spent a rewarding 4 years in Plymouth and love this community!

A bit about me...

I am not a native to New England, though after eight years it feels like home. I am from Colorado and miss my mountains every day. I love coffee, my music turned up very LOUD, and pretty much any creative or adventurous endeavor you can throw my way! All of which have been sanity saving attributes when teaching Elementary Music. Other hobbies include reading, running/hiking, art, and cooking!  I have a passion for all of the arts, but also grew up as an athlete and a bit of a book worm, so I have a variety of interests.  I am  married to a 7th Grade Middle School teacher and when we are not at school, we enjoy playing with our puppy Boston and are eagerly expecting our first daughter Nora!

I put every ounce of my heart and mind into my teaching. I consider it a great puzzle and adventure. I love challenging my students with new and diverse music and applications of music, then working in creative ways to hone their skills. I strive to make my classroom one where students can explore, experiment, and challenge the depths of their own creativity and knowledge. Music is so wonderfully personal and collaborative; it is the perfect platform for students express themselves while at the same time, develop empathy and sensitivity. I believe play and diligent work are both important in the music classroom, and furthermore, can be one and the same!

The Importance of Music Education

BY ALEXIS KALIVRETENOS

What if there was one activity that could benefit every student in every school across the nation? An activity that could improve grades and scores on standardized testing? An activity that would allow students to form lasting friendships? An activity that would help students become more disciplined and confident?
