In second grade, I see many lightbulbs turning on! Students really step into their musical ability with confidence in second grade and begin to exhibit independence with the musical skills we learn in prior years. I find that second graders can learn new rhythms, pitches, and musical concepts quickly and apply them in their own music-making.

Second graders learn sixteenth notes, new solfege on the treble staff, and more complex musical forms. We also spend quite a bit of time exploring music from other cultures. It is always so fun to watch kids respond to and make different musical sounds from new places around the world. They find that music can mean many things to many different people, but is always a great way to express yourself!
